Effective Network Marketing Lead Generation

I've had about 4 years experience with network marketing lead generation... the ins and outs, ups and downs of how to advertise your network marketing business and keep a steady stream of new, qualified prospects flowing into your sponsoring pipeline.
Think about it... all network marketing businesses require and endless supply of qualified prospects. Most network marketers do not know how to generate their own leads and so they go the "easy" route, using network marketing lead generation companies to find quality prospects for them.
I'm not totally knocking this method, for I used it myself for a number of years, and did have some results from it. However, I began to notice some changes in the network marketing lead generation industry over the years that I was involved in network marketing, and most recently I found that the leads I purchased even from highly reputable, good quality network marketing lead generation companies were, well, frankly — awful!
OK now there's a lot of considerations when we speak about network marketing lead generation and I've covered them in some other pages on this site (see below). I won't repeat that information here, instead I'm going to offer a bird's eye view of this whole topic.
Just so you know, I was an active representative for two network marketing lead generation companies for close to 4 years. I knew how to use leads to build my business, and I taught my team these skills.
The reason I stopped is because I saw the lead quality go down all across the board. By 2001 when I first started using network marketing lead generation companies, most of them generated their leads via the Internet. This worked well for a while, however in my experience, by about 2004 the quality of the leads began to deteriorate and by 2005 they were just plain awful!
Now I am speaking of honest, reputable network marketing lead generation companies, not the kind of unethical, fly by night operation that spammed people and oversold the leads.
Why did the lead quality deteriorate so badly? I don't know, although I can take a guess. Because I have no scientific evidence to back up my ideas, please do not take this as truth.
What I saw was a number of people getting into network marketing on the Internet, without any kind of training or skill. During 2000 - 2002 there arose a number of fancy Internet Marketing systems like powerlines and the like that used leads to create a semi-automated downline building system.
People liked it because they wouldn't have to deal with the fear of talking to people they know about their business. However, as these fancy Internet Marketing systems grew, so did the demand for leads.
There sprang up a ton of network marketing lead generation companies... not all of them ethical. And even the reputable ones would stretch themselves beyond their usual guidelines to accomodate the growing demand for leads, because they didn't want to turn customers away.
So, what happened? You can just about guess. Those poor people who filled out a form on a website got 200 phone calls from eager network marketing distributors who were promised either "exclusive" leads, or leads shared with "only 3 other distributors from other companies."
Imagine if you were a new network marketer, and just given $300 to a network marketing lead generation company, in the hopes of signing on some new people and building your business.
Instead, you get some enraged folks who threaten to sue you because you violated the Do Not Call list, etc. etc. Oy Vey!
Another thing happened related to this, that had to do with e-mail marketing. These poor people got spammed to death from hundreds of network marketers uploading their e-mail addresses into their network marketing lead generation autoresponder system.
The innocent network marketer assumed it was a valid lead, but unbeknownst to him or herself, the lead was SO oversold that they cried spam and in some cases, the network marketer would have his or her account shut down due to spam complaints.
This was not a pretty picture. Now it's easy to laugh now about it, but back then this was no laughing matter and many downlines who had grown dependent on network marketing lead generation companies found themselves falling apart, eroding from the bottom up because no one ever taught their team how to generate their own leads!
Yes, that takes a little more time and energy and skill, but like they say... give a man (or woman!) a fish and feed him for a day, but teach them HOW to fish and feed him (or her) for a lifetime!
There is another factor I have observed in the network marketing industry since September 11, 2001 that I feel affects the industry of network marketing lead generation. I call it the Fear Factor. People have become more afraid. They are less open to having strangers call them on the phone, and in my phone calls to leads in 2005 I found people to be QUITE hostile.
Now these were exclusive, local leads from an extremely trustworthy network marketing lead generation company, so I knew they weren't oversold. Being an intuitive person I could pick up right away on what was going on. People were downright scared, and so acted belligerent and nasty to protect themselves.
So now, after all that, we're back to the basics of network marketing lead generation... how to generate your OWN leads!
This method works the best because people are actually happy that you called them! They remember you from your website, and will thank you for contacting them! This just does not work when using network marketing leads generated by other companies.
You can generate your own leads locally or on the internet. Internet leads take a bit longer to set up but can be a good source if you know what you're doing. Offline leads can be easily generated using some simple tools.
One last things... this is not to say you should never buy another lead. In my own team, we've found that if we can get a very high quality advertising company that can generate leads via radio or TV, or by highly targeted company specific internet campaigns, that we get much better results. Our upline were leads generation experts for many years and they know some of the secrets of how to generate good quality leads.
